Carl Porter has performed publicly since childhood, when at the age of five he sang at his mother's barbecue restaurant in Memphis. Throughout grade school, Carl performed in plays, talent shows, and the school choir. His family left Memphis for Detroit when he was ten, and Carl continued to follow his love of music in school and with a number of groups, performing at cabarets, shows at Edgewater Park, and the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon. Since high school, he performed with R&B group The Confronters and gospel group One Accord, competing at the K.F.C. Gospel Contest as well as performing on stage with national gospel recording artists The Clark Sisters and Commissioned. After a disappointing recording project, One Accord disbanded. Carl sought solace with his church choir, but was again determined to return to a career in music after performing at a number of national Methodist conferences.

After a brief stint in North Carolina, Carl Porter returned to Detroit. In 1994, he joined the Kapp Ivory Project until he left to form his own group in 1996. Teaming up with Rodger Sims to perform as CR, Carl Porter was by now an accomplished vocalist and lyricist. It was here that he began writing and recording a number of his own original songs, at the same time CR toured throughout the U.S. and Canada performing gospel music. His talents came to the attention of jazz saxophonist Randy Scott, and together they did a year of shows and recording dates.

One demo found its way to Ann Arbor indie label MEGAWAVE Records which, by the end of 2001, was ready to sign Carl Porter as its first gospel artist. After working with a number of producers recruited for the recording project, Carl's career was again interrupted, this time by an unexpected medical emergency. Close to death, Carl had a vision, felt the hand of the Lord, and was inspired to write about Dr. Martin Luther King's dream. This song, Remember the Dream, was subsequently recorded for worldwide release in January 2010 on MEGAWAVE's gospel imprint A Higher Calling.

Carl's journey continued after this recording, meeting several accomplished, like-minded performers in 2009, and together they formed a new gospel group, Broken Pieces. Excited by the prospect of finally recording an entire album with four-part harmonies, Carl again approached A Higher Calling for this to be its first gospel group and first full gospel album. Production is now underway, with world-wide release expected in Summer 2010.
